Mahón and other hot spots

°

Capital of Menorca: Mahón.

On April 18, 1756, the Duke of Richelieu invaded Menorca and took the
port of Mahon. A theory states that the "aioli bo" sauce was thereafter adopted
by the cook of the Duke of Richelieu, who upon his return to France made the sauce
famous in the French court. At that point, the sauce became known as mahonnaise
(indicating it was named after the city of Mahon) (Wikipedia)

View over Mahón  from our hotel.

And the other direction. Yes, with a tiny pool.

Check the chimneys! Design in Mahón.

One of the most photographed windows.
And check the modern version on the right side ... hm - schön ist was anderes.

One of those streets where people live,
not a tourist trap. Yes, we walked a bit around.

The harbour boulevard ist quite different from the Ciutadella one.

Boats, sunset, Menorca.

Blue hour in Mahón.

Next day, before the bars open we did our church tour.

These are the typical minorcan chairs you see everywhere.

Kind of like them.

And then the churches ... check the matching flowers.

Quite impressive.
Both pics taken in the Església del Carme.

And hier the view from the same church. Not bad.

This neoclassic style monument is Mao’s largest religious building.

Ca n'Oliver

Amazing building with extraordinary collection and exhibitions.

The imperial staircase plays a vital role in the ensemble of the architectural space,
which hides a second stairway for the servants behind it.
The fresco painting of a Sicilian landscape on the first landing and the delicate
filigree fretwork of the handrail provide the hall with extraordinary beauty.

A lot of history. Art.

Due to corona the tower with a great view over the town was closed.

In the basement an impressive exhibition of New York born
(1935) artist Dolores Boettchen.

Artist's view of Menorca.

Oh, the web site might need updating ...

But look at his, she is in Facebook!

Yes, these sandals you have buy when in Menorca!

The avarca is a type of sandal popular in the Balearic Islands (Spain),
especially Menorca.
The shoes are made using a leather upper and a rubber sole.
They were originally made from a leather upper and with the sole made from
a recycled car tyre. Nowadays however the soles are made in the style of a car
tire but from a purpose made mould. These are hard wearing and much
lighter in weight than the original car tire sole. Only original avarca manufacturers
are granted with the label "Avarca de Menorca". This label is granted by local
Government and guarantees that avarcas accomplishes minimum quality
standards and avarcas are really manufactured in Menorca island. (Wikipedia)

Blue matches with jeans and other stuff.

Another must in Menorca: Caldereta, lobster stew.

Preferably you enjoy this stew in Fornells, on the northern
side of the island.

Torre de Fornells
was built during the English occupation, between 1801 and 1802,
with the view to controlling and protecting the entry to the port of Fornells.
For this reason it is situated on a high point with excellent views and its shape
is strengthened, as if it were a small impregnable castle.

Panorama pic.

If you cannot get a reservation here you have to settle with
the other recommendation.

Es Cranc.
The lobster as such was okay, said my hubby.

I was lucky to get some meat, but: the sauce was terrible.

Very nice location even though not at the water.

Actually there were many restaurants and everybody
was eating that caldereta stew.

Mahón harbour, one part of it, it is quite a long thing.

Menorca is famous for its beaches, bays, clear water.
Here a view over the biggest bay: Cala Galdana.

Well, this island lives of tourism as well, I guess.

And the other island in the horizon, Mallorca,
also tries to survive this corona year.

Bye bye Menorca, it was to meet you,
hopefully see you soon again.

Heading back to mighty Mallorca.

Mallorca, where the beaches are closed at night time.
Corona.
