SISU - nimipäivä!

°

 28.2.

ONNEA SISU-radio Frankfurt!

Finnisch für Anfänger:

NIMIPÄIVÄ = Namenstag / nameday

Nameday celebrations in Finland are not so big as birthdays.
But traditionally you can eat cake, get little presents
and spend time with your best friends.

Finns celebrate their name days (Finnish nimipäivä, Swedish namnsdag)
according to their given name on the date given by the calendar published
by the University of Helsinki Almanac Office (Almanakkatoimisto).
Every day except New Year's Day, Christmas Day and 29 February is a
name day. For each day there are names in both Finnish and Swedish;
the names are frequently, but not always, cognates. (Wikipedia)

Sorvin ääreen

 °

Dachstein.

Looks pretty odd but tastes good. Austrian.

Daily newsletter at the breakfast table.

SORVI = Drechselbank / lathe

Schladming

°

Finnisch für Anfänger:

HIIHTOLOMA = Skiurlaub / skiing holidays

Room with a view.

BIG SKI
My Swedish jacket bought in Luxembourg in 1988 (?).
Kasarimuotia parhaimmillaan!

Told you, room with a view.

Salzburg so close

°
When visiting Berchtesgaden you have to visit Salzburg as well,
it is so close, only 25 km away.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress you can see from far away.

Between the fortress and the river Salzach there is the old town.
No, not our bikes. We just walked, mostly in the old town.

Salzburg in winter. Not crowded.

Mozart kind of lost among those pick-ups etc.

Salzburg old town is totally decorated by pretty signs.
Gemächer seems the be THE local chain selling
high quality clothes, furniture and everything in between.
Several Christmas & Easter shops surprised me.

Easter eggs underneath the Christmas decoration.

Must admit, when I first visited Salzburg in the early 80s,
I did buy one of those liquor bottles in violin form.
This time got just a few Mozart Kugeln for a friend as a present.

I always thought that the original Mozart Kugeln were packed in red.
But apparently the real and original Kugeln are these.

It was originally known as Mozart-Bonbon,
created in 1890 by Salzburg confectioner Paul Fürst (1856-1941)
and named after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. (WIKI)

Even though it was a very windy winter day we did not
make a break in that famous Sacher Hotel.

Check this, even the fast food restaurant has a pretty sign.
This time I missed my bigger camera, not happy with iPhone's zoom.

Posting this because of the colours!
My lunch in the Blauer Gans.
Buffalo mozzarella NOT with boring tomatoes but
with mango, radicchio and pasta without garlic.

This place might be an option for accommodation in Salzburg old town.

Contemporary art in Salzburg. Balkenhohl.

Well, well, well, where the hell was the woman?

An art-work in two parts

The German artist Stephan Balkenhol created two sculptures,
drawing the viewer's eye to two different aspects of his capacity
for sculptural expression and provoking confrontation and interpretation.

The one and the other

The sculpture "Sphaera" on Kapitelplatz is about nine metres high.
It represents a male figure on a golden sphere with a neutral expression.
This man might be 'everyman'. The same neutrality is reflected in
Balkenhol's 140 cm-tall female counterpart, "Woman in the Rock".
Neither figure tells us its story. They appear to reflect everyday reality,
and yet remain emotionless and anonymous. Balkenhol's art invokes
a great range of interpretation. His sculptures move along the very
thin line of recognition and doubt, proximity and distance.

Holy cow!
Matti & Teppo is a Finnish duo, brothers who started their career
very, very long ago. This LP is from 1982.
I could have bought it in Salzburg but I left it for real music lovers.
Schlager from Finland, totally.
The music shop "Musikladen "is in the Linzer Strasse.
Bitteschön.

Berchtesgaden in Bavaria

°

Why does one travel to Berchtesgaden in Bavaria in winter?
Oderazzi traveled to Bavaria because good friends
from Finland traveled to Bavaria as well. So simple.

Such fun meeting friends who happen to have relatives
hosting a holiday home in the historical district.

This blue house is called Burmesterhaus.

Burmesterhaus features various types of holiday apartments from
modern penthouse studios to spacious three-room apartments for
your holiday. All apartments are equipped with new kitchens or
kitchenettes and bathrooms. In addition, the house offers some
shared facilities for guests.

At the latest when you enter the kitchen area of your apartment
you are sure that this house has Finnish owners:
scissors by FISKARS.
You probably know the Fiskars scissors with orange colour.
This light pink edition was produced a few years ago
for a breast cancer campaign "Roosa nauha".

The orange-handled scissors are one of Fiskars’ best known products.
But how was it decided to make the handles of the scissors orange?
In 1967 when the first basic models were about to be manufactured
the designer wanted the scissors to be black, red or green.
As the prototype went into production, the machinist decided to finish
off the orange color he had in his machine. This meant prototypes were
made in four different colors, of which the orange and black were most popular.
A choice had to be made. An internal vote was taken at Fiskars,
and the result gave birth to Fiskars orange-handled scissors.

When you walk from the Burmesterhaus towards the
center of the village, admire all those beautiful, old buildings.

Stiftskirche Berchtesgaden & Berchtesgaden Royal Castle.

The Deer Museum
with the collection of Duke Albrecht of Bavaria (1905-1996)
has found its home in the stables of Berchtesgaden Castle. The skulls of
altogether 1290 bucks, does and fawns and 3.425 antlers, mostly from the
Weichselboden area in Styria, are all kept in the Deer Museum and a new
concept has been applied to their presentation. That makes the collection
accessible to the public and it is also available for scientific research.

This winter has been mild. Reminds me of Helsinki.

Der Weg der Seligpreisungen, one of the numerous hiking paths.

Hirschenhaus at the market square.

Just one of the decorated houses.

Very charming.

Yes, this area is very, very catholic.

Jesus on show almost everywhere. This is not a church.

Luckily enough also these fantastic signs are decorating house facades.

British design and all kinds of other cool products can be
found in the small shops around the town, you just have
to walk around with open eyes.
