SISU, Kalevala, culture

°

On February 28th the Finns celebrate their own,
very Finnish culture, on that very same day they also
honour Kalevala, the national epic of Karelia and Finland
and it happens to be the nameday of Sisu (and Onni).

Finnisch für Anfänger:

NIMIPÄIVÄ = Namenstag / nameday

SISU-radio team decided to celebrate the nameday.
Quite aggressive advertising was posted in social media.

Afternoon coffee party!

The cosy Little Finland Shop & Cafe in Hanau
was chosen as the party location.

Yes, we had quite many copies of Kalevala.

Here is the description how kantele was made. (wikipedia)
Kantele, traditional music instrument.

Josie, a German student gave us a cool performance
how kantele is played. Very cool.

Some books from my home library.

Yes, and even a local broadcasting company sent their camera
woman to make an interview and take some shots.

Annika, the friendly Finnish woman behind Little Finland,
was happy with the customers.
She also does online selling - vinkki vinkki.

Harjanvarsiaskartelua

°

Finnisch für Anfänger:

HARJANVARSI = Besenstiel / broom  handle

https://finland.fi/christmas/the-original-finnish-christmas-ornament/

A collection of rusty sticks. What to do with them?
Through away, you'd say.

But hello, they are hollow!
What a perfect HIMMELI material indeed!

Let's saw!

Serves the purpose, yes, but ...

Let's hang it somewhere a bit further away.

And the Moroccan part added to the bottom part, looks good.

Well, the Moroccan lamp thing was broken.
The handle was off - but not thrown away.
Instead of handle there now are plants.

Sant Francesc Palma

°

The old town of Palma really has some treasures to offer.

Like the area around the Basilika de Sant Francesc.

Last Saturday after the jazz concert we already passed
by this huge church. Unfortunately the square in front
of it is packed with parked cars and even a waste
container is positioned so that it must be in every
tourist picture.

Early afternoon facing the sun.

The San Francisco de Palma church is a good example of Gothic
architecture. It was built between the 13th and 14th centuries and
holds the tomb of Ramón Llull. On the other hand, the façade was rebuilt
in Baroque style throughout the 17th century. The most important
element is the Gothic cloister, which is unique in the Kingdom of Aragon.

Sant Jordi and the dragon.

Tourists enter the church from the side door.

The interior is great, even though the side altars were dark.

S. Antonio's corner had bright lights.
This must be the same Antonio that we celebrate
in Artá in January.

Behind the altar such a cute painting of Mallorca.

Check this: installation art in the chapel of Ramon Llull.

POÈTIQUES DE LA GEOMETRIA

Reflection on the wall of the chapel.

And further up more colours.

Outside of the basilica, in the cloister the exhibition continues.

Cannot touch it.

The artist Horacio Sapere, Argentinian born (1951),
living in Mallorca since 1975, also works in NYC since 2011.

Peaceful. in the middle of the city.

Worth visiting.
It is the second biggest church in Palma, hello.
Entrance fee 6€ (2023).

Facing the church there is this high end hotel
Sant Francesc  -  what else.

This weekend they hosted a Flower Show.
Well.

Well, well, you could buy flowers in the beautiful
courtyard in the hotel.

Pretty flowers.

Last but not least, already away from the Sant Francesc square,
somewhere in the old town this great sign
for a record store serving wine.

Tierische Zeiten

°

This pic is not perfect but I like the shade.
