Es lebe die Malerei! - Vive la Peinture!

°
Another megalomaniac exhibition in Städel, Frankfurt:

MATISSE

 BONNARD

Press people were invited to see the show on Tuesday.

Und Städel gibt Raum für die Malerei mit Leben.
In schönen, pastellfarbigen Räumen mit runden Ecken,
"sehr schön" meinte der Direktor Philipp Demandt von Städel.

Bonnard.

Matisse.

Vive la Peinture!
Es lebe die Malerei!

Matisse sent this postcard from Amsterdam to Bonnard 1925.

Die knappen Worte auf einer 62 Briefe umfassenden Korrespondenz
der beiden Künstlerkollegen, die bis 1946 andauerte und in der sie
ihre gegenseitige Wertschätzung zum Ausdruck brachten.
(Katalog S. 19)

THE postcard and other letters.

Hello, I thought it was Gaugain who spent time in Tahiti!

Matisse went everywhere, here notes from New York.

Guess which one is by Matisse.

Henri Cartier-Bresson photographed houses of both artists.
Good photographs.

Well, Matisse, fruit, oriental lady.

Fruit basket by Bonnard.

Closeup of Bonnard's apples.

Matisse sketched and made 22 photos of his sketches.

The final lady is also shown on the cover of the catalogue of this exhibition.
Grosser liegender Akt, 1935, The Baltimore Museum.

Here they come, the CUT-OUTs by Matisse.

They were collected in a book called JAZZ.

And then ... going through the exhibition something irritated me.
The frames!
Those dominant, eye-catching, utterly decorative, shining frames.

As such very attractive, indeed.

Reminds me of renaissance, barock, whatever - but for these paintings?

This golden frame is almost brutal.

Here we are reducing a bit.

One of the rare paintings with a modern, simple frame.

Unfortunately also with glass. Reflexions do disturb.

All over, the curators did a good job, here Felix Krämer.

Man betrachtet
sowohl Bonnard als auch Matisse mit anderen Augen.
Dennoch bleiben sie bei aller Ähnlichkeit immer sie selbst.

Unfortunately Städel is loosing Mr Krämer to Düsseldorf,
this was his last exhibition in Frankfurt.

Daniel Zamani was the colleague and
presented his part in the press conference also very well.

Well, anyways, come to Frankfurt and go to Städel
and make your own picture of this exhibition.
Running time: 13.9.2017 - 14.1.2018
Recommended: the audio guide,
German text is spoken by this great actress Sophie Rois.

Check also the digitorial, very informative and yes, also in English:

And blue and orange are the leading marketing colours.

If for any reason, you cannot make it to the museum,
you can go trough the catalogue at our place
where all pics are printed without the frames!

PS Such a good idea to mark the water bottles also from the top!
Sin gas / kuplavettä / ohne Kohlensäure / bubbly /Mineralwasser
